Larry Foote isn’t being grandfathered-in to the spot vacated by James Farrior.

We’re hearing that the coaching staff wants a true competition at the position.

This is interesting.

The roster has very few names that could be considered viable starters. After Foote, the team has Stevenson Sylvester, Mortty Ivy, Marshall McFadden and Brandon Hicks under contract at inside backer.

Unless you buy into our argument that Jason Worilds could move inside, it’s asking an awful lot of the current roster to provide a solid starter at the position for an entire season.

Reading into this – maybe a little too far – perhaps the team really is targeting a linebacker early in the draft.

Dont’a Hightower would be a perfect fit for the defense.

Whether that’s the case or not, it’s a little surprising the front office would decide to hang onto Foote if they weren’t going to give him the job outright. His salary is hefty for what he’ll provide otherwise.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting year for the Steelers. With so much turnover happening with regards to the roster, the locker room was already stacking up to be a lot different this season.

Now it appears the coaching staff may turn the depth chart on its head as well.
