Free agency begins today.

Could the Steelers be looking into the past for some insurance at wide receiver?

A source tells us that Willie Reid was spotted on the South Side earlier this morning.

It’s uncertain if Reid, whom the Steelers selected in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft, was here due to anything football related. Perhaps he was just in town to reminisce about his time as a pro football player.

Something of an enigma during his short tenure in Pittsburgh, Willie had his supporters and his doubters. Producing a total of 54 yards on 4 receptions with a fumble lost – he certainly didn’t turn into the weapon the team thought he would when they drafted him out of Florida State.

It’s highly unlikely that the Steelers are interested in Reid – he has been out of the league since 2009 – when he spent some time on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

If nothing else it is interesting to hear that such a forgotten name has turned up in the city where his short career began.

Should the team lose leading receiver Mike Wallace via restricted free agency, they will need to bring in some receivers.

But could they really be looking at Willie Reid?

It’s hard to believe the situation is that dire.
